Postcard of Fulbourn High Street

This page examines in detail a postcard with a photograph of Fulbourn High Street, taken prior to 1908.

First a basic scan of the front of the postcard:

To the left of the picture is 3-5 High Street (today in 2022 this is the Fulbourn Kebab shop), at the time of this picture the first one of the four houses was the post office. The sign says "Fulbourne Post Office" (this spelling was rare but also used by the railway station). Behind that is the Six Bells public house, and in the distance is the green grocers shop (which probably was a smithy back then). On the right is 6-8 High street (now the antiques shop), which has changed very little.

Behind number 8, the next house (and most of the gateway) has been demolished and replaced with four shops (10A, 10, 12A & 12), it appears the planning permission for these four shops (and four studio flats above) was granted in 1991. In between 1908 and 1991 there was a petrol station in the location of the gateways, and I think there was a fire that may have damaged the building.

Here is a zoomed in crop of the girls playing with their hoops. Sadly they are in shadow, and there is no detail in their faces. Similarly there is nothing able to be seen on the pub sign in the road.

Here is a crop of the man standing in the doorway of 8 High Street.

Below is an example of a post office sign (taken from an eBay listing). This is not necessarily exactly the same type of sign that can be seen above the door in the post office above, but this was a very common sign, and bears very strong similarities to the one in the picture.
